Chunky Circle Scarf, a Free Beginner Crochet Pattern

chunky crochet circle scarf

Winter is officially upon us! It finally snowed here in our neck of the WA woods, and it's close in ID as well, so Hilary and I've been on a crocheting blitz. Nothing makes me want to crochet more then cold weather, there are so many cute things you can make for cold weather. Hats and scarves and headbands, oh my! So if over the next couple of weeks we post a lot of crochet patterns, don't be surprised.

My daughter's cowl scarf looked so comfy and warm that I decided I needed to experiment with making a big girl's version. This is a super beginner crochet pattern, that only takes about an hour to an hour and a half to complete. The perfect thing to whip up for a holiday gift (or for yourself)!

You can wear it long like in the picture above, or loop it twice for a chunkier look:

*Edited to add, I have also made a headband to match this scarf. I'm kind of in love with this white yarn*

You will need:
1 skein of a "chunky" yarn. I used Bernat's baby blanket yarn in white.
N hook

Hdc: half double crochet
Sl st: slip stich
Ch: chain

1. Ch 54. Sl st to join ends of chain into a loop, making sure you do not twist the chain. Ch 2.

2. Begin hdc. Hdc 54, sl st to join. Ch 2 to begin the next row. Repeat for five rows.

That's it! This is by far the fastest result and most satisfying result for a crochet project yet. And it even matches the chunky head wrap I made with the same yarn. This set is so cute it hurts!

  1. Hi! I'm rather new to crochet and have been waiting for fall so I could make myself something pretty and super warm. This pattern seems like the perfect answer - beautiful yet reads simple. However, I'm running into an issue and I dont know why. Everytime I do the ch 2 on the next round, I'm left with a noticeable space. What am I doing wrong? I could send you a picture if that would help you visualize it (also I'm using a K hook and worsted weight yarn). I'm just confused as to why I'm having such trouble. This is the second cowl with the same pattern I've attempted (the other was a ch of 87 from crochet in color) but I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Sorry for such a long comment .
