Thrifty Tip Tuesday: The Gift Closet

This is a the door to a very special room in our house, a room my daughter and husband know they dare not enter...

Even though Christmas is right around the corner, I will give you all a peek inside. Are you ready? This time of year it's pretty scary.

The first reason I do a gift closet is simple: It saves me money, a lot of money! All year 'round I am on the prowl for things to add to it cheaply, so that whenever a birthday/wedding/holiday pops up I'm ready, and we don't have to budget for it that month.

The second reason I do one is my favorite: Charity! This is the picture of what our family was able to donate to Toys for Tots and the Tree of Sharing this year:

Woo hoo! This makes me so, so happy. This is not including the gifts I was able to give my own children, husband, girlfriends or family either. And since I can't really show you what's left in my gift closet for Christmas, I will break down for you what I look for during the year, in general.

1. Stuffed animals with the tags still on them. You can find these all the time at thrift stores! If they're clearly new, clean, have tags and are under $1 (which they usually are), I'll throw them in our gift closet. These make great Toys for Tots donations, baby shower presents, ect.

2. New books. This is another frequent thrift store/garage sale find. The five books in this picture are all from a garage sale where they were less the $.50 apiece. They are all completely brand new, spines unbroken, and one of them still has the CD in it in the original cellophane wrapping, unopened. Score! New books also work for adults too, as a lot of people receive books as gifts and donate them without having read them. You can frequently find new adult books at thrift stores too, these make great gifts for friends and family.

3. Toys. Either new in the box/packaging toys from thrift stores, or from super clearance sales at big box stores. Target has some amazing 75% off toy clearance sales twice a year (August and January, typically). But it's good to think outside the Big Box too, a lot of these toys were actually purchased from Rite Aid after Christmas last year for mere pennies on the dollar.

4. Gifts for adults: These can be anything! Kohls and Target frequently has amazing sales/clearance and deals on things that work as generic gifts like candles, day planners, fluffy socks, etc. I like to keep things like this on hand for my adult friend's/family's birthdays, teacher gifts or white elephants.

  1. This is genius! My Sister-in-law has a gift closet too. I need to get one started for me too! I'm always running out last minute to find gifts!
