spring sewing: little girl shorts!

As I've already mentioned recently, my Girl has outgrown her spring and summer clothing from last year. I've been working on sewing her a few home made items to fill out her warm weather wardrobe. I've already made her a hi-low circle skirt, but she still needs some shorts!

So we dug through my fabric stash and she chose a super cheerful floral print, and I dug through my collection of vintage patterns. I found this gem:

Isn't it wonderful? It's almost as old as me! (And we all know my weakness for old things...) And although I kind of love that red and white polka dotted top with the white bow shorts, the all over abstract pattern blue and white outfit was a bit much. Nevertheless, I thought that the basic shorts pattern with the cute side ties would make for an adorable pair of shorts for the Girl. I was right!

I tried both the pants version of the pattern and the shorts. The pants really ended up being more of a capri length, which will be perfect for the spring. I especially love the little bow detail on each side, so sweet!

for a waistband I did the simple elastic casing that the pattern called for, then I sewed two lines of straight stitches over the elastic. This really helps give it a more "finished" look, and also keeps the elastic from rolling around.

What do you think? I think I may have to make two or three more pairs of the shorts. The only thing I changed was that I had to take at least two inches off of the sides on each pair. My Girl is skinny! They looked like bloomers until I did that. Otherwise, they turned out great! I actually think I may try the shirt as well, maybe in a cute pink jersey...
