denim dress refashion: keep or toss?

denim dress refashion

I refashioned a dress!

This dress began it's life this way:

Eeeeewww...

It's not bad, really, it's just...really mumsy. I tried it on because I felt like it had some potential. After all, denim dresses are very "in" right now. Sadly, it was really unflattering on me, and the color was about as dated as could be.

Not to mention that the sleeves were too tight, and the most unflattering length ever. So I started by cutting off the sleeves:

I just simply turned the raw edges over and sewed them down. Then I bleached the heck out of the dress itself. I've been wanting to try bleaching denim for a while, and since I wasn't in love with the dress in the first place, this was the time to experiment!

I added about 6 cups of bleach to the hot setting of our washing machine, and let it sit for three hours. At the end I got this:

Not a bad color! I took out the hem of the dress, because I wanted to turn it into a very very slight hi-low hem, kind of like a men's shirt. At the sides I cut out a little triangle:

Then I re-hemmed the bottom, and cut off the ugly too-small decorative pockets with my trusty seam ripper:

The end result of all of my hard work and about a month of deciding how to remake it is this dress:

With this cute hemline:

I have to be honest, I'm not 100% sure about this dress. It just feels "off" somehow, like it's not really me. (truthfully I feel like I should be sporting a neck scarf, red lipstick and leopard heels with it. Too rockabilly for my personal taste!) I wonder if the styling is what I don't like...I don't know! I just can't decide if I should keep it or toss it in the Goodwill pile.

What do you think? Keep or toss?

    1. Thank you! The hemline is actually cute, it's the bodice I don't really like. I was thinking I may turn it into a skirt...

    2. It looks cute! You could always play with the top a bit and chop it to a skirt if you don't like how it turns out. Are you brave enough to do a strapless? You could add something at the top there. I'm just popping over from WFMW and I look forward to checking out the rest of your blog.

  2. I like what you did to the dress. Quite impressive, actually! I'm trying to think of a different way that you could style it, but honestly, I'm not much of a denim dress kind of girl so hard to come up with options. I do think it fits you very well!

    1. I've been lusting after a denim dress for a year now, but I'm starting to wonder if maybe a denim dress is just not my style either. I think I'm going to try styling it different ways, so we'll see!

  3. The hem is super cute I think it's the top bit where the pockets used to be that is a bit "off." Still super impressive!

  6. I think it looks amazing! The bleaching was so clever...never would have thought to do that. I just spent the last 10 minutes googling styling ideas for denim dresses, but honestly...I like the way you did it best. In the fall, you could do some boots with it...saw a lot of that. I think keep it. :)

    Have a good weekend!

    1. I've been looking for cowboy boots at thrift for what feels like forever! But even then I'd be more likely to style them a little more "rocker" and a little less "country"...although I could always pair it with a black leather jacket!

  8. I think this is a great refashion. I like the denim bleached. And I think it simply looks week-endy and casual on you...not really rockabilly. (= Lynaea @ EveryDayBloom.com

  10. Bleaching it was genius! I'd keep it -- try it with different accessories including a light weight short sleeve collarless jacket and play with it some more before deciding. Thanks so much for linking on Busy Monday!

  11. If you still have your dress, what about replacing the buttons for red ones, a red belt, red shoes. A cute jacket or sweater would cover the area where the pockets were. Perhaps if the pockets had been removed before the bleaching process, it MIGHT have made that area not so obvious. I am impressed with what you did with the dark blue denim. Good ideas.

  12. I think it's very nice idea Very pretty color on you and the hem is interesting. One thing that came to mind is to add darts to bodice for shaping. That would eliminate the need for a belt and give you a clean long line.
