homemade and gluten free taco seasoning


Even before I (Jessica) moved here and started cooking gluten-free whenever we include Hilary's family, I was already aware of how much junk goes into pre-packaged seasoning packets. There are all kinds of fillers involved, and those fillers often include gluten-y flour for thickening, as well as a ton of sodium and sugar. So basically, they're terrible for you. And as my dad has celiac disease and can't have gluten, any time he came over for dinner we had to improvise on things like taco seasoning.

So I experimented with making my own taco seasoning using *gasp* nothing but real spices and today in this super quick post I'm going to show you what I came up with.

First, let's talk about spices. Spices can be incredibly expensive if you buy them in the baking isle, making things like homemade taco seasoning really pricey if you're starting from scratch! The single best way to get around this start up cost is to buy bulk spices. Stores like WinCo, Fred Meyer and Whole Foods have bulk sections where spices can be bought by the ounce. And because you're not paying for all the expensive packaging and brand names this makes spices incredibly cheap!


Anyhow, here's the recipe!

Homemade Taco Seasoning

1. Black pepper- 1/2 tsp
2. Salt- 1/2 tsp
3. Chili powder- 1 Tbsp
4. Cumin- 1 1/2 Tbsp
5. Garlic- 1/4 tsp
6. Paprika- 1/2 tsp
7. Oregano- 1/2 tsp
8. Red pepper flakes- 1/4 tsp

Use about 1 Tbsp on 1 lb of cooked meat (I use shredded chicken most of the time). Add 1/2 cup of water and mix well, simmer on medium heat for about five minutes.
